In 2020, Joe Biden won Maine by just over 9 points. This win was primarily fueled by towns along the coast, as well as some inland towns like Lewiston, Augusta, and Bangor/Orono. Democrats notably lost ground along the Canadian border and in rural areas in general. At the same time, the state re-elected Republican US Senator Susan Collins, and both Democratic US Representatives (despite Biden only winning one of their districts)
In the transition zone between the coastal Democratic areas and inland Republican turf sit Androscoggin and Kennebec counties. They hold the cities of Augusta, Lewiston, and Waterville. Trump won the duo by just under a point by doing well in the more rural towns, but lost ground from his 2016 numbers
Maine SD 1 takes in most of Aroostook County, the towns of Caribou and Madawaska, and sits along the Canadian border. The area used to be fairly Democratic, and even has Democratic State Senate Majority Leader Troy Jackson, but Trump won it by almost 12 points. Sen. Jackson is term limited in 2024, and we will likely see this seat flip to Republican control (though the State Senate is likely to remain Democratic)
